The Cold Misfire Field Guide · work notes for the toolkit & the driveway
A cold misfire is the classic ghost: the engine starts, idles lumpy for the first ten minutes, smooths out once the metal comes up to temp, and spits a code that says "multiple cylinders" or nothing at all. Most folks shotgun a tune-up at it. Here's the order I actually read one.

Start the diagnosis before the hood's open. Ask three questions and their answers bisect the whole engine:
Question
What it narrows
Does it miss at idle, under load, or both?
Idle-only points at the low-speed circuit (idle air, vacuum, worn distributor). Load-only points at fuel supply or ignition under RPM. Both is often a whole cylinder / whole bank.
Cold, hot, or always?
Cold-only → a worn gap or a sensor/valve that opens warm. Hot-only → heat soak of a coil or crank sensor. Always → compression or a fixed fuel problem.
Does it throw a code, and which bank?
Codes are a shortcut, not a verdict. A misfire code tells you which cylinders, and lean/rich points at fuel trim before you swap a single part.

Every misfire lives in one of three circuits. Cut the engine in half mentally before you open the wallet:

Compression test (all cylinders) · leak-down test if uneven · valve lash · head gasket

1.Read the code, then verify it. A stored misfire code is an accusation, not a conviction — do the live-data cylinder balance test if the scanner can.
2.Fuel pressure at the rail, key on, engine off, then under idle. Specs beat guesses.
3.Ignition — pull each plug, look at the electrode: color, gap, carbon track. Check wire resistance. Look at cap and rotor inside and out — a hairline crack or carbon tracking between towers is exactly the ghost that shows cold and hides warm.
4.Compression test — if three of the last four left the engine or the miss follows a single cylinder under all conditions.
5.Only after all that do I name a part and price it.
The cracked distributor cap, told properly: in high humidity — and Texas August is a sauna — a hairline crack or a carbon track between two towers will fire the wrong plug with the engine cold, then the carbon track heats, the resistance climbs just enough to suppress the errant arc, and the miss fades. She runs fine by the time she's warm. If you only ever test the car warm, you'll never catch it. (spark plug reference)
Safety first, esé: never pull a plug wire off a running or hot engine to "listen for the miss" — the coil can throw 20,000+ volts through you. Use a timing light / power probe on the wire, or kill the engine, ground the plug, and crank it. My free clinic won't teach a trick that puts a neighbor in the ER.
